When the server progresses to a state where we want to attract and keep players, we should have a tutorial in place that introduces new players to the server's main features. I asked myself, what is important when I spawn, what do I want to know if i was clueless and I join an RPG server? It would be things e.g. how can I get a job? how can I get weapons? Where do I buy a car? but also thinking. What is important from our perspective to inform new players about.
We currently have a simple pop-up when you spawn, telling you what the server is, but really basic and it does not make the player learn the server. So I thought, why not have a forced tutorial mission? I know the downside to this is that players will get annoyed by the fact that they HAVE to do the tutorial. But I assume players that are actually interested in playing here, will take the time to drive to a few locations on the map and get to know the most important basics.
Ideally, new players would be awarded with an extra 250 ecash for completing the tutorial mission. Maybe it's an idea to change the starting cheque's value to 300. A bit more then 250 in case they die and will be unable to get a job. And lowered from 500 to keep the starting budget the same as it is. In the end it will be 550 Ecash anyways, if they put in a little effort.
The option of skipping the tutorial could be a question that recurring players will know the answer to. I have not really decided on what would be the best question to put there. For now I thought it would be most suited to have it ask the name of the server owner.
( PS: the /help menu is something for later)
If you have any ideas to encourage new players to try out and stay on the server please do share them! The more the merrier.
Welcome to Society:V
We are an RPG server where you can play as one of the many jobs the server has to offer.
Save up enough money to be able to buy your own clothing, weapons, vehicles, houses and businesses.
Participate in events organized by the server and the staff team to win prizes.
If you want to blow off some steam you can join the deathmatch or stunt/racing lobby and compete with your fellow players.
Completing this tutorial will give you a starting bonus of 250 ECash.
(To skip the tutorial, Answer the following question: What is the name of the Owner of the server?)
Quick menus are displayed on the right side of the screen. (F1-F7)
Start/Stop your engine by pressing 2
T for text chat. Global chat (/me), Job chat (/j), gang chat (/g), send a private message to another player (/pm) reply to someone's message (/r), ask admins for help in /@. Report players with /report
X for voice chat. Be sure to check the user control panel (F6) to see your voice chat settings)
To start off, you have been given a cheque of 300 Ecash. Follow the marker on your map to drive to the Pacific Standard bank in Vinewood.
Bank checkpoint: (243.4945, 214.7209, 106.2836)
You have arrived at the pacific standard bank. This is the main server hub where all players gather to talk and trade.
Being inside any bank on the map at 6:00 AM will give you daily bank profits.
Press F1(inventory key) to open your inventory. Click on your cheque and click on use to get 500 Ecash.
Let's go to the next important location, the Ammu-Nation!
Ammu-nation checkpoint: (247.1736, -47.4198, 69.9385)
Welcome to the Ammu-Nation. The place for all your weapons and firearm needs.
To be able to buy firearms you will need to own a weapon licence.
We advise you to not buy any weapons until you have earned some more money.
Killing other players will increase your wanted level. The higher your wanted level, the more police will be paid for taking you down. (New addition for police? higher wanted = more ec for kill/arrest?)
NOTE: killing other players is allowed. Some jobs even earn money by killing others(Police, Criminal).
However, kill too many players for no reason and you can expect an admin to intervene to keep everyone's experience enjoyable. You risk being put in admin jail for griefing other players.
On to the next location! Follow the marker on your map to the clothing store.
Clothing store checkpoint: (124.2857, -218.8747, 54.5546)
Welcome to the clothing store. Here you can buy clothes to design your character to your liking. You can also choose to buy a different skin model from the server. You can choose from over 700 available skin models, but they are priced higher than regular clothing items.
Let's move on. Follow the marker on your map to the Licence center. (I want a new location for the licence center, it's currently a bit confusing. Maybe I'll find something else that suits)
Licence center checkpoint: (111.7582, -749.1956, 45.7421)
To be able to purchase vehicles and weapons, you will need a licence.
For example, if you want to buy a car, you will need to buy a car driving licence before you can own one.
Buying a licence will cost you 500 Ecash. (Since they have gotten only 300 ECash from the starting cheque, it will prevent them from wasting their only money on a licence right away)
Next up is the dealership! Follow the marker on your map to the dealership.
Dealership checkpoint: (-38.9538, -1099.7274, 26.4154)
Welcome to the dealership, here you can buy any car you find around los santos & outskirts.
If you find a car you want, drive it into the dealership and you will be able to buy it.
Optionally you can buy a temporary rental car. A cheap option to have something to get around in. (Maybe feature for later: Rental car)
You can see your owned vehicles in F4 (Vehicle menu).
Finally, let's get you a job now shall we? Follow the marker on your map to the Business Center.
Business Center checkpoint: (-113.0506, -606.1187, 36.2726)
Welcome to the Job Center, here you can pick the job you want to play as.
We advise you to take a non-deathmatch job to start off, as deathmatch jobs can be quite expensive to start with.
Enlisting for a job will cost you 250 ECash.
You can always change your job, as long as you can afford the enlisting fee of 250 ECash.
Good starting jobs are Public Driver, Trucker or Paramedic. Go to the marker at the desk to choose your job.
This is the end of the tutorial.
For more general server information, check out the /help menu. (To be worked on)
If you have questions or need further help, don't hesitate to ask online admins in /@ or try asking players in the global chat /me.
Good luck and have fun!
(Give player 250 ECash)
